Jankara, Bombata, and Pelewura marketplaces in Lagos Island would be completely razed, according to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to enable for urban renewal of the area.

The governor stated while inspecting several Island drainage channels on Saturday.

“We are here on a drainage and regeneration call,” Sanwo-Olu stated. Human activity, particularly from the nearby markets, causes the entire stretch of Idumagbo Avenue to frequently flood during the rainy season. We must completely reconstruct since they obstructed the free flow of water by constructing on the canals.

Thus, Jankara and Bombata marketplaces must be eliminated in order to allow for a proper regeneration of Lagos Island; otherwise, it would serve as a ground zero. This serves as notification that the markets will be cleansed to accommodate our goals for urban redevelopment. The new market’s design is complete.

The Pelewura market has more traders, so we will still give them adequate warning, although this is the initial notice.

Urban models must take their place since “these markets have outgrown and outlived a market in a modern city.”
