Father Ejike Mbaka, a Catholic priest known for his outspoken nature, has stated that he will continue to share what he refers to as “prophetic messages” regarding Nigerian politicians and elections, despite facing criticism.
During his New Year’s message at the Adoration Ministry Enugu, Mr. Mbaka emphasized that he does not have control over these messages and that they come to him sporadically.
He clarified that he does not involve himself in politics but rather delivers these messages as he receives them from God. Mr. Mbaka further emphasized that if he is instructed to deliver a message to a specific individual, such as President Bola Tinubu, no one can prevent him from doing so. He also mentioned that if he is directed to inform someone privately about their potential failure in an election, he will do so, but if they do not listen, he will publicly share the message to avoid being associated with supporting a failure.
Mr. Mbaka made it clear that his ability to prophesy is not due to his ordination as a Catholic priest but has been a part of him even before he entered the priesthood. These statements by the cleric seem to be in response to his previous critical remarks about Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate.
Despite the controversies sparked by Mr. Mbaka’s criticism of Mr. Obi, this was not the first time the clergyman had publicly denounced a politician in Nigeria.
Between 1999 and 2007, Mr. Mbaka frequently clashed with Chimaroke Nnamani, the former governor of Enugu State.
In his 2015 New Year Message, the cleric also targeted then-President Goodluck Jonathan, criticising his administration in the lead-up to the presidential election that year.
Mr. Mbaka predicted that President Jonathan would make way for Muhammadu Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, who ultimately won the election and became president.
Once again, in April 2021, the Catholic priest, who is known for supporting President Buhari, surprised many by attacking the then-president and calling for his resignation or impeachment due to “bad governance.”
The presidency responded to Mr. Mbaka’s criticism by suggesting that the priest was upset because President Buhari had ignored his request for contracts.
