The President of Namibia, Hage Geingob, has died
The authorities of the southwest African state have announced the passing of Namibian President Hage Geingob, who died in a hospital in the capital city of Windhoek while receiving treatment for cancer.
Acting President Nangolo expressed deep sadness and regret in a post on X (formerly Twitter), informing the nation of the President’s demise.
Geingob had been diagnosed with cancer during a routine medical checkup in January and had undergone experimental treatment in a specialized Los Angeles cancer hospital.
Upon his return to Namibia, he had been undergoing chemotherapy. The acting president called for an immediate convening of the country’s cabinet to follow the necessary government procedures.
Geingob, a prominent figure in the liberation struggle and a key contributor to the Namibian constitution, had been involved with the SWAPO movement since his youth.
He served as Namibia’s first Prime Minister after the country gained independence in 1990 and was elected as President in 2014, serving until his passing in 2021.
