Telecoms Tariffs To Be Increased Soon But Not By 100% – Minister
The Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy announces an impending increase in telecom tariffs, assuring that the hike will not be as high as 100%.
The Federal Government has announced plans to raise telecom tariffs, assuring Nigerians that the increase will not be as high as the 100% requested by operators.
Bosun Tijan, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, announced this during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.
He mentioned that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) would develop strategies for adjusting tariffs in the telecommunications sector.
Tijani stated, “We have considered various approaches to ensure meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s development.”
Some key actions involve implementing the Executive Order to safeguard telecommunications infrastructure, significantly increasing local content, and crucially ensuring the sustainability of telecom companies. As global inflation rises, it’s important not to undermine these companies but rather support their continued viability so they can contribute effectively to our economy.
“Over the past weeks, it has been evident that some of these companies have pushed for a 100% increase in tariffs. However, as a government, we cannot agree to this at the moment.”
