Telecom operators are set to disconnect unlinked SIM cards as the NIN deadline expires. Find out how this will impact mobile users.

After the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) September 14 deadline, telecommunications companies in Nigeria will start to disconnect mobile lines without National Identification Numbers (NINs).

Starting September 15, inactive SIM cards that are not associated with NINs will be deactivated.

Before the deadline, the NCC advised subscribers experiencing difficulties with NIN-SIM linkage or verification mismatches to expeditiously approach their service providers for a resolution.

In March 2024, the NCC reported that out of a total of 219 million active mobile lines from network providers such as MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile; only 153 million had been linked to NINs. This leaves around 66 million unlinked lines in danger of being disconnected.

Millions of mobile lines were temporarily suspended in July due to unverified NINs, resulting in significant disruptions. However, the NCC has now reversed this decision and allowed subscribers more time to comply.

Without any additional extensions, disconnections will begin now that the latest deadline has elapsed.

An NCC official, who chose not to disclose their identity, verified that no more extra time will be given and said individuals who are non-compliant with the regulations would face disconnection. They further emphasized that the grace period has passed.

Subscribers are experiencing frustration due to challenges encountered at registration centers and issues with the portal of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

Adeolu Ogungbanjo, the President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, has labeled the situation “terrible” and is imploring the NCC to extend their deadline due to ongoing technical difficulties that a large number of users are experiencing.

Despite the concerns raised, the NCC stands unwavering in its decision to signal that the extension period for linking NIN-SIM has come to an end.
