An investigation has been launched by Tanzanian authorities after a video depicting gang rape reportedly went viral, leading to nationwide protests. According to local news sources, arrests have already been made in connection with the incident.
On Sunday, footage depicting multiple men assaulting a young woman started circulating online and has caused great concern. Various human rights groups are urging prompt action from the authorities.
The police issued a statement indicating that their inquiry is “making good headway” but refrained from verifying any detentions. They reassured citizens that they would disclose additional comprehensive details after the judicial proceedings and requested everyone to maintain composure.
The public was also urged by officials to exercise vigilance while disseminating information online, stressing upon safeguarding the victim and her loved ones from any additional damage.
It has been reported that Home Affairs Minister Hamad Masauni verified the detention of some suspects, but did not furnish any precise information.
On August 4, Boniface Jacob- the former mayor of Ubungo district in Dar es Salaam informed the public about an incident via a social media platform X. The assault reportedly occurred in another part of Dar es Salaam and according to Jacob, it is possible that Tanzanian military personnel were involved; although there’s no validation for this claim yet.
Describing it as a grave violation of both legal and societal norms, the Tanganyika Law Society denounced the occurrence.
The Msichana Initiative, a group dedicated to promoting girls’ rights in Tanzania, urged for resolute measures against what they labeled as “barbaric deeds.” They deplored the persistent online dissemination of the footage and contended that it merely exacerbates the shame suffered by the victim.
An appeal has been made by the Legal and Human Rights Centre to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for a public condemnation of the assault, with cautionary remarks that not taking action on such matters could potentially contribute towards its rise under pretext of misusing authority.
Local reports indicate that this incident is not unique, as in 2019 multiple men were detained in northeastern Tanzania for committing a string of gang rapes.
