Senator Barau has vowed to fight brain drain by providing Nigerian youths with the necessary opportunities to succeed at home rather than abroad.

Over the weekend in Abuja, the National Assembly affirmed its commitment to bolstering legislative frameworks that will provide additional opportunities for Nigerian youth and confront issues around brain drain within the country.

During an event hosted by Muslim Men in Business and the Professions, Senator Jibrin Barau – who serves as both Deputy President of the Senate and 1st Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament – hinted at something.

Barau gave an assurance that the ECOWAS Parliament is ready to promote the socio-economic well-being of people in the West African sub-region by creating a favorable environment through legislation.

He observed that the conference’s theme, “Balancing patriotism and self-preservation,” as well as its topic on “Challenges faced by Nigerian youth at home and abroad” highlighted an ethical dilemma among some of Nigeria’s young people.

Their distorted mindset prevents them from recognizing the value and authentic meaning of being a Nigerian.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President has stated that through collaboration with the executive branch of government, the federal legislature aims to provide youth with opportunities to maximize their potential within Nigeria’s borders.

He stated that today’s discussion focuses on the dilemma faced by Nigerian youths, which is captured excellently in its theme “between patriotism and self-preservation” as well as in its topic of challenges at home and uncertainties abroad.

The speaker believes that some young people have a distorted perspective that prevents them from fully embracing their nationality or understanding what it truly means to be Nigerian.

I applaud the event organisers for establishing a platform with great potential to facilitate idea-sharing that can propel our national values and development forward.

There’s no better demographic to focus on than the youth, who are both leaders of today and tomorrow. Their exceptional talents, energy, creativity, courage, industriousness and devotion make them a prime target audience for any initiative or movement.

I would like to reiterate that the National Assembly is dedicated to improving pertinent legislation that will create a favorable environment for Nigerian youths, encouraging them to stay and participate in the nation’s growth.

Rest assured that the government’s legislative and executive branches are collaborating diligently to provide ample prospects for our vast youth population, enabling them to achieve their full potential.

As the 1st Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, I pledge to guarantee seamless legislation that advances the socioeconomic wellbeing of our sovereign nations’ people and particularly empowers youth.

In his welcome address, Kamil Olalekan, the President of the organisation highlighted how excessive immigration has negatively impacted Nigeria’s national development.

He emphasized that it is imperative to tackle this issue and identified retaining Nigerian youths – especially skilled professionals – as a crucial concern for national progress.

However, he felt remorseful that the most brilliant minds in information technology, medical sciences, biotechnology and academia are departing due to a widespread negativity regarding the nation’s future.
