Suspension of three LG bosses in Jigawa due to foreign travel

Three local government council chairs have been suspended by the Jigawa State House of Assembly for allegedly leaving the country without getting permission from the state legislature or executive branch.

Among the suspended chairmen were Hon. Mubarak Ahmed of Birniwa LGA, Hon. Rufai Sunusi of Gumel LGA, and Hon. Umar Baffa of Yankwashi LGA, who was rumoured to have visited Ruwanda.

Following a motion to suspend the impacted council chairs by Hon. Aminu Zakari Tsubut, Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Affairs, the House took its decision.

He explained that the House had ordered the state’s local government council chairs not to go because the state governor, Malam Umar Namadi, was preparing a bill for the 2024 state allocation and wanted to deliver it before the Assembly.

Tsubut characterised the chairmen’s behaviour as insubordination and a casual attitude towards their principal responsibility, which should be looked into and punished legally.

The motion made by Hon. Tsubut was backed by the members representing Guri, Hon. Hamza Guri, and the Malam Madori Constituency, Hon. Usman Abdullahi Tura.

The three local government chairman were then unanimously suspended by the House, and their vice was ordered to assume control.

Nonetheless, the House established a committee to look into the issue and report back to the House for additional action within four weeks, with the Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Muhammad Dansure, serving as the committee’s head.
