Adegboruwa calls on Nigerians to immediately stop nationwide protests, highlighting the need for peace and stability.

Human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has urged Nigerians to cease the nationwide hunger protests presently in their second day.

In a statement released on Friday, Adegboruwa appealed for calm amidst the ongoing demonstrations and expressed concerns over the losses that have been incurred. He emphasized that such losses were never intended to be part of the protest’s objectives.

His plea was for the demonstrators to vacate their protest locations and halt protests both immediately and indefinitely. This would create space for constructive dialogue with the federal government.

To prevent additional harm and fatalities, it’s imperative for the organizers and their affiliates to engage in communication since reports suggest that external actors have interfered with the protests.

I offer my deepest sympathies to the employers and families of the security personnel, as well as to the protesters. My thoughts are with them during this difficult time and I pray that God will provide comfort and strength in order for them to cope with their substantial losses.

He went on to implore President Bola Tinubu to “deliver a direct message to the nation and subsequently interact with protesters through their delegates.”

It has been reported that Adegboruwa is a member of the legal team representing Take It Back Movement, one of the organizations actively involved in current demonstrations.

On July 26, 2024, Adegboruwa wrote to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), requesting police coverage for protesters involved in a planned #EndBadGovernance demonstration.
