Supreme Court judgement: Kano experiences escalating tension as police enforce riot act
The Nigeria Police Force, Kano Command, has once again pledged to take decisive action against any planned protests and anything that might end the tranquilly that the state is now enjoying, ahead of the Supreme Court’s decision on the Kano State governorship issue.
Speaking at the time that the two main political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), had resigned from a peace agreement was Police Commissioner Muhammad Usaini Gumel.
Tension is high in Kano as people wait for the Supreme Court’s decision on the contentious guber election, according to Obasanjo News24.
The Commissioner made a suggestion that the State Joint Security Committee was established to ensure that anyone who violated the signed peace agreement, regardless of their disguise, would undoubtedly bear personal responsibility.
The head of police became enraged, saying that some anonymous organisations were determined to spread fear and mayhem throughout the historic city in spite of the peace accord.
He declared, “We will not allow anybody to cause strife and violence among peace-loving Kano citizens, regardless of his position in society.”
Speaking, Hashimu Dungurawa, the chairman of the NNPP, and Shehu Maigari, the state deputy chairman of the APC, differed about who should take blame for the events that transpired in the State following the first and second signing of peace agreements.
The NNPP State Chairman, Hashimu Dungurawa, said that his party and the State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, had been collaborating with the security forces to maintain peace, accusing the APC members of encouraging violence.
Shehu Maigari, the deputy chairman of the APC, countered that his party had nothing to fear, saying that everyone knew who was to responsible for the deaths and the violent protests in the state.
