On Thursday, at the 2024 Paris Games, Nigeria’s Super Falcons started their Olympic journey with a challenging defeat of 0-1 against Brazil.

Nigeria, despite their strong credentials from the 2023 FIFA World Cup performance and an eight-match unbeaten streak upon arriving in Paris, encountered difficulties in their initial match.

In Bordeaux, despite creating multiple scoring opportunities early on Nigeria couldn’t convert them into goals.

It was anticipated that the Super Falcons would either secure a lead or at least maintain parity with Brazil by halftime. Nevertheless, Gabi Nunez scored eight minutes before the interval, putting Nigeria behind and requiring them to mount a comeback in the second half.

Brazil’s solid defense proved to be a formidable obstacle for the Super Falcons, who fought hard after halftime.

Despite making tactical changes and bringing fresh substitutions into play with hopes of scoring an equalizing goal, Nigeria failed to penetrate their opponents’ backline.

Scheduled for July 28, Nigeria’s upcoming match against Spain, the reigning world champions poses a challenge to be reckoned with. The Super Falcons will then clash with Japan on July 31.

Spain emerged victorious over Japan with a 2-1 score in their Group C match. Meanwhile, the US claimed an impressive 3-0 win against Zambia in Group B and France dominated Colombia with a commanding 3-0 victory in Group A.
