In a challenging run, the Super Falcons face another defeat at the Paris Olympics, battling against strong opponents.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons experienced another close 1-0 loss against Spain during their second appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the 85th minute of the match at La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes on Sunday, Alexia Putellas scored a crucial goal from a free kick. This ended a prolonged period of unwavering defense by the Falcons and proved to be the decisive moment.

Having lost their first match against Brazil, the team faces another defeat in the tournament which marks their second consecutive setback.

The starting lineup underwent various alterations under the leadership of head coach Randy Waldrum, whereby Asisat Oshoala was substituted in for Chinwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo was favored over Jeniffer Echegini.

Even after making these changes, the team’s offense still struggled to compete with Spain’s strong performance.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Nigerian goalkeeper, was tested by Spain with more than ten shots before halftime. This came as a result of their position as reigning world champions.

Despite a few counter-attacks by the Falcons, Rasheedat Ajibade was unable to take advantage of an opportune moment orchestrated by Oshoala.

During the beginning of the second half, Salma Paralluelo believed she had scored a goal from a free kick that would give Spain an advantage. However, after VAR analysis deemed it to be offside, the goal was disallowed. Ultimately, Putellas impressed with her execution on another free kick which ultimately secured Spain’s triumph.

To have a shot at advancing as one of the top third-placed teams, the Super Falcons must prevail over Japan in their last group match.
