The head of Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Wednesday urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to formally drop all charges against Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader.

In response to the recent release of Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, often known as Igboho, from prison in the Benin Republic, Ohanaeze issued the request.

Recall that on October 1st, 2023, Ohanaeze had pleaded with Tinubu to free Kanu and convince the Benin Republic government to free Igboho.

After being detained for two years, Igboho was finally freed by the Beninese government last week.

Igboho left Nigeria when the Department of State Services, or DSS, issued a wanted notice for him, and was captured and imprisoned in Cotonou.

However, the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, praised the unrelenting efforts of Yoruba leaders who helped secure Igboho’s release, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Professor Banji Akintoye, Professor Wole Soyinka, and Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed, according to a statement from Isiguzoro. So Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed its gratitude for their commitment and tenacious pursuit of justice.

In order to accomplish this, he advised Tinubu to release Kanu in the same manner as President Patrice Talon of Benin.

Isiguzoro believed that freeing Kanu will promote peace and unity within the country.

“We express our satisfaction with President Patrice Talon of the Benin Republic for releasing Sunday Igboho through the intervention of Yoruba leaders and political figures,” he stated.

“Now, we think it’s time for President Tinubu to follow suit and make comparable gestures by dropping all charges against Nnamdi Kanu.

“The release of Nnamdi Kanu will not only help to bring peace to the Southeast region, but it will also help our country with its ongoing security issues.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo strongly believes that granting Kanu his freedom will foster reconciliation and promote more harmonious coexistence among different ethnic groups in Nigeria.”
