The convict, Olu Gbenga, was brought before Magistrate Bankole Oluwasanmi on March 21, 2024, facing a charge of stealing.
The charge specified that Olu Gbenga, residing at Bus Terminal, Old Garage, Ado Ekiti, stole a jacket cloth valued at N80,000 that belonged to Babatunde Bagilaje.
The incident occurred on December 26, 2023, at Oluwatedo Community, Ado Ekiti, within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District.
The offense committed by Olu Gbenga was in violation of Section 302 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
He was presented with the charge in Yoruba language, to which he pleaded guilty during the court proceedings.
The complainant, Babatunde Bagilaje, reported that he had hung his suit jacket and trousers on a rope outside his house, only to find the jacket missing later that evening. Upon spotting the defendant wearing the stolen jacket on March 19, 2024, along Ilawe Road, Bagilaje confronted him, leading to the defendant’s confession of the theft.
During the trial, the prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, presented a witness and submitted the stolen jacket, along with statements from both the defendant and the complainant, as evidence.
Despite pleading guilty, Olu Gbenga requested leniency from the court. However, Magistrate Oluwasanmi Bakole found him guilty of the offense and sentenced him to four months of imprisonment with hard labor at the Federal Correctional Centre in Ado Ekiti, starting from March 21, 2024.
