Suicide of police inspector follows accidental killing of fellow officer during arrest

Inspector Monday Gbaramana, a comrade, was accidentally slain by police inspector Nelson Abuante when the two were attempting to catch a suspect in Rivers State. Abuante then committed suicide.

On Sunday afternoon, December 17, an awful incident happened at Nyogor-Lueku in the Khana Local Government Area of the state.

Two police officers from Taabaa Division reportedly travelled to Nyogor-Lueku to arrest Akere Akpobari after learning of allegations made against him by his mother.

It had been necessary for the two inspectors to use force because Mr. Akere had refused to be placed under arrest.

“During the altercation, Gbaramana was shot by Inspector Nelson Abuante by mistake, resulting in serious injuries to him.” Thus, the injured cop was rushed to the hospital by Abuante and Akere’s mother, a source told Punch.

Inspector Monday passed away when the vehicle transporting them to the hospital ran out of petrol.

The source continued, “Abuante took his gun and shot himself in the head as soon as he learned his colleague had died.”

The mortuary had received the remains of the two officers so they could be autopsied.

Grace Iringe-Koko, the Rivers Police Public Relations Officer, verified the occurrence to the media. According to Inringe-Koko, the incident is still being investigated.

“Yes, the event did occur. We’re looking into it to find out what actually happened,” she remarked.
