The leader of the Sudanese military has commended Turkey’s proposal to mediate in the ongoing conflict, which has persisted for 20 months between his forces and their paramilitary adversaries.

At a meeting in Port Sudan on Saturday, Abdel Fattah Al Burhan requested Turkey’s Deputy Foreign Minister to inform Turkish leaders that they appreciate President Erdogan’s initiative.

In a statement issued last week, the United Arab Emirates commended Turkey’s “diplomatic efforts” directed towards “resolving the ongoing crisis in Sudan.”

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and forced 12 million people to flee their homes.

It has additionally driven the country to the verge of famine, with analysts cautioning that foreign involvement could exacerbate and extend the suffering.
