States Receive N3 Billion in Flood Disaster Relief Palliatives

The government has allocated N3 billion to states as palliative measures to support victims and recovery efforts following devastating floods across the country.

The Federal Government has allocated a sum of N3 billion to states affected by the recent flood disasters across the country in an effort to alleviate the hardships faced by their citizens.

The disclosure was made on Wednesday during the National Economic Council Meeting convened at the State House in Abuja.

Vice President Kashim Shettima presided over the meeting which was graced by governors, deputy governors and a few ministers from various states in Nigeria.

Presentations were also given by Bills Gate, the co-chair of the Bills and Belinda Gates Foundation, as well as Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State addressed State House Correspondents after the meeting, stating that several states in the Northern region suffered major flood damage resulting in loss of life and destruction of property.

He clarified that the purpose of the funds was to swiftly assist those affected by the calamity through food and temporary housing. This aid would specifically cater to individuals who have been forced out of their residences.

According to Governor Bala, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture has been instructed by NEC to lead a joint effort aimed at adopting an all-encompassing approach in tackling the flood calamities ravaging the nation.

NEC has instructed for an inventory to be conducted in order to determine the extent of flood damage.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State also informed the State House Correspondents that the NEC Committee on Flood has been reassembled, with the Vice President now acting as Chairman.

The Committee is comprised of the following governors: Usman Ododo of Kogi State, Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Umar Namadi from Jigawa State, Seyi Makinde representing Oyo state and Francis Nwifuru from Ebonyi. Douyi Diri fills the final position by representing Bayelsa state on this committee.

Ministers of State for Water Resources, governors from Bauchi, Jigawa and Bayelsa States along with representatives from certain government agencies comprise the remaining members.
