Elon Musk’s Starlink plans to establish ground stations in Lagos, alongside two other states, boosting its Nigerian operations.
Starlink, a satellite internet corporation established by Elon Musk, is progressing with its efforts to upgrade Nigeria’s online access. This involves the establishment of ground stations in key locations throughout the nation.
Insiders with knowledge of the matter have revealed that Starlink procured approximately 29,000 acres across three Nigerian states as part of its undertaking. Specifically, installations are scheduled to be constructed in Okun Ajah (Lagos State), Sagamu (Ogun State) and Port Harcourt (Rivers State).
Sources, wishing to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of the project, have provided reliable information confirming that construction has already started at the Lagos site.
Completion of the Okun Ajah station is expected to occur in Q4 2024, with Ogun and Rivers states’ facilities targeted for completion by 2025.
Equinix, the world-renowned provider of data center solutions, has partnered with Starlink to set up these ground stations. In 2022, Equinix made its debut in Nigeria by acquiring MainOne for a staggering $320 million.
The financial specifics pertaining to the project are undisclosed, but Starlink’s dedication towards consolidating its position in Nigeria within their wider global network expansion is evident by the magnitude of this endeavor.

Ground Stations play a significant role in space operations.
Gateways, or ground stations of Starlink, are essential for facilitating communication between the Earth-orbiting satellites and internet backbone on land. As a crucial link in the chain, these stations transmit data both ways – from satellites to networks stationed on earth and vice versa.
The parent company of Starlink, SpaceX, operates roughly 150 ground stations across the globe. These facilities play a crucial role in linking Starlink satellites with internet data centers that are connected to pre-existing fiber-optic infrastructure. This connectivity enables seamless transmission of data between users on earth and the Low Earth Orbit satellites.
The Effect of Connectivity on Nigeria
The establishment of ground stations by Starlink in Nigeria is anticipated to enhance internet connectivity within the country. By reducing dependence on international data centers, these local stations will enable a more direct and efficient process for transmitting internet traffic, which could potentially reduce latency and boost overall performance.
This advancement assures swifter and dependable internet services for both individuals and companies. Historically, Nigeria’s network traffic had to traverse foreign data centers which caused delays as well as probable congestion points. The ground stations of Starlink aspire to simplify this procedure leading towards a smoother online experience.
The Increasing Presence of Starlink in Nigeria
In 2022, Starlink obtained an ISP license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), allowing it to operate in Nigeria. Additionally, the company acquired a Sales and Installation permit as well as an International Gateway authorization that enables them to set up telecommunications facilities for transmitting international voice, data, and other services into and out of Nigeria’s borders.
Starlink is anticipated to strengthen its position as a major participant in the Nigerian telecommunications industry through the establishment of these ground stations. Despite higher expenses than local ISPs, Starlink has rapidly gained popularity since commencing operations in Nigeria during January 2023. As per NCC data from Q1-2024, Starlink took over third place among internet service providers across the country and follows established contenders such as Spectranet and FibreOne.
Starlink’s extensive satellite coverage has become increasingly popular among Nigerians who desire reliable service due to poor internet access in their regions.
