According to American media, Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer found guilty of killing George Floyd, was stabbed and critically hurt.

At the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, on Friday, another prisoner attacked Chauvin, according to reports from the Associated Press, the New York Times, and ABC News, all of which cited anonymous sources.

Chauvin was in a “stable” condition and was anticipated to live, according to persons familiar with the circumstances that ABC News quoted.

A request for comment from the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson was not immediately answered.

Following Floyd’s death in 2020, there were massive demonstrations against racism and police brutality, and “I can’t breathe” became a catchphrase for the movement in the US and many other nations.

Without providing the offender’s name, the Federal Bureau of Prisons verified that there was a stabbing at the Tucson jail, but neither the convict nor any staff members were hurt.

Chosen guilty of both murder and manslaughter in April 2021, Chauvin was given a 22 and a half-year jail sentence. Chauvin was shown on camera squatting on the Black man’s neck for over nine minutes.

In a different case in June 2022, Chauvin was found guilty of breaching Floyd’s civil rights and given a 21-year jail sentence.

The US Supreme Court turned down Chauvin’s appeal of his second-degree murder conviction on Monday.

Chauvin’s attorneys had contended that the public’s safety could be jeopardised in the event of his acquittal and that he was denied the right to a fair trial due to pretrial publicity.

Floyd’s death scene involved three other former officers who were sentenced to three years to 57 months in prison.

The US Justice Department’s investigation into the Minneapolis police concluded in June that the officers had a history of using racial and violent tactics, “including unjustified deadly force.”
