Rotimi Akin, the spokesperson for the House of Representatives clarified that legislators earn a monthly salary of N600,000 instead of the rumored amount of N900,000.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Akin clarified the House members’ dedication to decreasing hardship by reaffirming their commitment to reducing their salaries by 50%.
According to him, certain media sources have flooded the House of Representatives with reports alleging disparities in members’ salaries. The reports insinuate that they received full payment for July’s salary.
According to the report, our salary totaled N936,979.
Let us make it clear that members’ actual monthly wage is N600,000. This amount takes into account deductions made for advances such as housing expenses which are settled at the beginning of their tenure.
He claimed that the individual who revealed their salary on a TV show was not the norm, as they were appointed by court order several months after completing the standard onboarding procedure.
According to him, the House’s dedication to the resolution enacted on July 18th, 2024 persists; it orders a half reduction in members’ salaries for six months.
It is regrettable that the bureaucracy did not implement this resolution as intended for July. We acknowledge and apologize for this.
Akin stated that the bureaucracy received formal instructions on July 23, since House resolutions are only confirmed when plenary votes and proceedings are approved on the following legislative day.
Due to necessary administrative procedures and coordination with financial institutions, he explained that the implementation was delayed.
He further stated that guidelines for modifying salaries have been issued and will be implemented from now on to guarantee the fulfillment of their commitment.
Akin stated that some media outlets had reported inaccurately as the House had already communicated its stance on the issue to journalists who sought clarification, leaving nothing else to investigate.
He urged for patience and guaranteed that the House would remain dedicated to its promise, continually striving to gain the faith and assurance of all Nigerians.
