Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, has called on Igbo leaders in the South-East geopolitical zone to actively engage with the government in order to address the legitimate grievances of their people.

During the launch of the Peace in the South East Project (PISE-P), Speaker Abbas emphasized that efforts have been made to ensure a fair distribution of infrastructure projects across all six geopolitical zones in the 2024 Appropriation bill.

While recognizing the economic strengths of the South-East, he expressed concern over the ongoing agitations in the region, which have resulted in significant losses. Therefore, he stressed the importance of rebuilding the South-East to expedite its recovery and restore its position as an economic powerhouse.

Speaker Abbas also highlighted that the peace and progress of the entire nation is interconnected with the peace in the South-East, and the PISE-P initiative was initiated due to his deputy’s deep affection for the region and genuine worry about the escalating insecurity that has overshadowed the area.

He further lamented that the prevailing insecurity continues to disrupt daily life and hinder socio-economic activities in a region known for its resourcefulness and economic prowess.

Speaker Abbas emphasized that Hon. Kalu’s project is a significant and patriotic undertaking. He highlighted the historical and economic importance of the South-East region, stating that it was once the fastest-growing economy in Africa and Asia. The Speaker acknowledged the entrepreneurial and resourceful nature of the Igbo people, noting their contributions to trade, commerce, and industrialization.

He also recognized the Igbo community’s substantial investments and impact on the Nigerian economy. Furthermore, Speaker Abbas acknowledged the Igbos’ achievements in various fields, including literature, academia, and the creative industry. However, he expressed concern over the challenges faced by the region, such as separatist agitations, unrest, and terrorism. To address these issues, the Speaker emphasized the need to understand the root causes, including the sense of marginalization and the perception that the South-East’s voices are not adequately heard in national discussions.

The youth in Nigeria are facing economic challenges and a lack of opportunities, which leads to frustration and makes them more vulnerable to radical ideologies.

This is not limited to just the South-East region, but is a widespread issue across the country. Additionally, it is important to acknowledge the historical context and the memories of past conflicts and perceived injustices that continue to shape the sentiments in the region.

Nigeria is a diverse country with over 250 ethnic groups and multiple religions, which is both its greatest strength and a significant challenge that can sometimes result in division and conflict. The task at hand is not only to coexist but to thrive in this diversity.

The challenges in governance, such as corruption and ineffective administration, have worsened the situation and eroded trust in the authorities. The Speaker believes that the PISE-P project can bring peace, stability, and sustainable development to the South-East region and restore the prosperity of its people.

To achieve sustainable peace, a multi-faceted approach outlined in the project’s seven pillars must be adopted. Inclusive governance is crucial to ensure adequate representation of the region’s people at all levels of government and decision-making processes. It is also important to recognize that peace is essential for development, and the desired development in the region cannot be achieved without peace.

History has shown that violence and chaos do not resolve conflicts, highlighting the need for open and honest dialogue and reconciliation between the government, community leaders, and different ethnic and social groups in the South-East.

Speaker Abbas emphasized the importance of restoring peace and order before focusing on economic opportunities, especially for the youth.

He assured that the National Assembly would allocate funds for infrastructure investment, support for local businesses, and the creation of job opportunities. The upcoming 2024 budget would prioritize a balanced distribution of infrastructure projects across the six geopolitical zones, aiming to rebuild and accelerate the region’s recovery.

Additionally, the House of Representatives passed the South East Development Commission bill, which, when signed into law, would aid in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the region.
