Sowore: Nigeria Suffered Under IBB, Gowon, Obasanjo, and Abacha

Activist Omoyele Sowore has accused past leaders, including IBB, Gowon, Obasanjo, and Abacha, of causing harm to Nigeria. Read more on his statement.

On Wednesday, activist politician Omoyele Sowore revealed that Nigeria endured irreversible damage under military dictators such as former leaders Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Yakubu Gowon, Sani Abacha, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Abdulsalami Abubakar.

Sowore stated that while they were in power, these former military leaders exercised control over Nigerians.

He revealed this while posting a video on his X account, showing the moment when the late MKO Abiola’s body was brought to his residence in Lagos before the burial.

Sowore revealed that at MKO Abiola’s burial, he and fellow activists made a decision to bury the Nigerian military in metaphorical terms and hold accountable those responsible for damaging Nigeria.

He stated: “Nigeria has endured lasting damage under military dictators, particularly Ibrahim Babangida, Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu Gowon, Sanni Abacha, Olusegun Obasanjo, Abdulsalami Abubakar and other military leaders.”

I attended the burial ceremony of Chief MKO Abiola in 1998. He was recognized as the winner of the June 12, 1993 election. His body had been brought from Abuja following his sudden passing, and it was a very sorrowful occasion.

“It was a day we announced the decision to lay to rest the ‘Nigerian military,’ yet it is crucial that we also commit earnestly to holding accountable those within their ranks who have harmed our nation. #RevolutionNow”

His revelation came after the release of IBB’s new book, “A Journey in Service.”
