Southern Nigerian states contributed ₦387.06 billion to the VAT pool but were allocated only ₦149.09 billion in August 2024, sparking discussions on revenue sharing.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) disclosed that the Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue generated in Nigeria’s southern states significantly surpassed the VAT pool allocations they received in August 2024.
Recent data from the FIRS indicates that nationwide VAT revenue for August reached N444.19 billion, with southern states making a notable contribution of N387.06 billion.
Nevertheless, even with this substantial contribution, the southern states were allocated only N149.09 billion in VAT.
This stands in stark contrast to the situation in the ten northern states, which collectively contributed N13.69 billion but received a significant N59.17 billion in allocations.
For example, Zamfara State in the north contributed only N432.80 million but received N5.65 billion in return, whereas Lagos State contributed an impressive N249.77 billion and received just N40.22 billion back.
Reports indicate that Nigeria’s proposed tax reform bill, introduced by the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reform under the leadership of Taiwo Oyedele, has recently ignited widespread debate.
The reform bill aims to simplify the tax system by aligning various levies, consolidating revenue collection procedures, and incorporating technology for improvement.
Recent data from the FIRS underscores a disparity in VAT contributions and allocations. It reveals that southern states receive significantly less in allocation compared to their contributions, whereas some northern states benefit from allocations that exceed what they contribute.
