South-West Governors to Launch Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team to Tackle Insecurity

Governors of South-West states in Nigeria are set to establish a regional surveillance and monitoring team to enhance security and curb criminal activities in the region.
Governors of the South-West region have decided to create a collaborative surveillance and monitoring team to address and reduce insecurity in the area.
This was one of the resolutions adopted by the South-West Governors’ Forum at their meeting in Lagos on Thursday.
In response to emerging security threats, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State announced on his X handle after the one-day meeting that they have decided to create a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team for improved security coordination throughout the South West.
The Lagos governor, serving as the chairman of the Forum, reiterated the governors’ commitment to take “decisive actions to ensure the safety and stability of our communities.”
Since taking office in May 2023, President Bola Tinubu’s administration has introduced a series of economic policies, such as eliminating the fuel subsidy and allowing the currency to float.
According to experts, these two actions have caused the inflation rate to soar, making basic items unaffordable for millions of Nigerians.

During the meeting, Sanwo-Olu stated that the governors expressed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. They commended him for achieving economic stability and improvements nationwide, especially regarding the consistent supply and distribution of petroleum products as well as stabilizing the exchange rate.
They attributed the increasing food prices in Nigeria to “dishonest intermediaries within the supply chain.” However, they “committed to forming a State Food Inflation Joint Monitoring Team and setting up Aggregation Centres and Food Hubs as measures to tackle food inflation.”
The South-West governors also praised the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) by President Tinubu’s administration.
They mentioned that the initiative has “significantly benefited students in our region” and urged eligible students “to make use of it” to advance their education.
The governors of the South-West expressed their gratitude to the Federal Government for establishing the South West Development Commission (SWDC), which is headquartered in Cocoa House, Ibadan, Oyo State.
“I am completely confident in Odu’a Investment Company Limited’s handling of our regional assets,” stated Sanwo-Olu. “We encouraged the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission to enhance collaboration with our Agriculture Commissioners to advance industrialization and infrastructure development.”
