A petition led by South Africans calls for the disqualification of Chidimma Adetshina from the Miss Universe pageant, sparking a debate on eligibility and representation. Learn more about the controversy.
The South African organization, Progressive Forces, has initiated a petition to prevent Chidimma Adetshina from participating in Miss Universe 2024.
This follows Adetshina’s arrival in Mexico on Wednesday.
It has been reported that the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria has arrived in Mexico to represent her country at the 2024 global competition, which is set to take place in November.
Chidimma Adetshina encountered criticism in South Africa when her participation in the Miss South Africa contest was announced.
In response to the controversy, the South Africa Department of Home Affairs (DHA) stated that initial evidence indicates Chidimma’s mother engaged in fraud and identity theft.
Following the allegations, she stepped back from the pageant and accepted an invitation to participate in the Miss Universe Nigeria competition.
Following the development, Progressive Forces of South Africa filed a petition with the Miss Universe organizers on Wednesday to disallow Chidimma from participating in the competition. They argued that her participation could compromise the integrity of the Miss Universe brand.
The petition has gathered more than 1,000 signatures in just 24 hours.
We are very concerned about Chidimma Adetshina, Miss Universe Nigeria, following the recent conviction of her mother for identity fraud.
“Home Affairs annulled the identities of Chidimma Adetshina and her mother by court order on October 29th. The group expressed in its petition, ‘We represent those who stand for justice and urge Miss Universe to revoke her entry.’”
