South African President Faces Calls to Resign Over New Visa Policy for Nigerians
South African President faces growing pressure to step down following the implementation of a controversial visa policy affecting Nigerians. Explore the reactions and implications.
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s move to implement an easier visa process for Nigerians has sparked widespread criticism in South Africa, leading to growing demands on social media platforms for his resignation.
The policy aimed at boosting economic and tourism opportunities was revealed on December 3 during the 11th Session of the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission in Cape Town.
Critics of the initiative contend that the government is prioritizing international relations over domestic concerns. The opposition has manifested in an open letter addressed to the president and a surge of online protests.

In response to the controversy, the presidency justified the policy as a key element of a larger strategy aimed at simplifying visa procedures globally.
“Our initiatives to establish a supportive environment involve implementing an easier visa process for Nigerian entrepreneurs. Eligible individuals will have the opportunity to receive a five-year multiple-entry visa,” stated Ramaphosa. He also mentioned that Nigerian citizens would no longer need to present passports when applying for visas.
The announcement comes at a time when relations between Nigerians and South Africans are strained, often manifesting in tensions on social media. Critics have expressed concern that loosening visa restrictions might exacerbate South Africa’s current social and economic issues.
In spite of the backlash, the government maintains that the initiative seeks to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.
