The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi was allegedly targeted for “assassination,” although Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo has denied this.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, was proclaimed the winner of the presidential election on February 25 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The election’s third-place finisher, Mr. Obi, disapproved of the results and pledged to sue to have them overturned.
Shortly after, a claim appeared on social media that Mr. Soludo had a meeting with Mr. Tinubu, the president-elect, and his son Seyi at the Imo State Government in Owerri. There, they allegedly made a deal with the governor of Anambra State to prevent Mr. Obi from seeking to reclaim his mandate through the courts and to “assassinate” the LP candidate.
According to the report, the governor received $5 million in order to “assassinate” the LP candidate and place the blame on the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra, a group driving the movement for an independent state of Biafra that it wants to be carved out of the South-east and some regions of the South-south.

But, in response to the rumours on Monday, Mr. Soludo called them “infantile, disgusting, mischievous, and excessively inflammatory” through his spokesperson, Christian Aburime.
He said that as the governor of Anambra, he is the father of the state’s residents and that he will not “plan or cooperate to hurt any legitimate citizen of the state including Mr. Peter Obi,” whom he regarded as “a brother and friend” despite their divergent political allegiances.
In response, the governor said that the charge was part of a plan to disrupt the upcoming state assembly elections in the South-east.
All of the accusations, he claimed, were untrue, and he had been in the state getting ready for the polls on March 11.
“If some people could sit down and concoct a story of this sort, it becomes highly disgusting and surely deserved to be criticised by every right-thinking person,” Mr. Soludo added.
The insinuations made in the article should all be ignored by Ndi Anambra as they are untrue. During this Saturday’s State House of Assembly election, they should cast a large number of APGA (candidates) votes, he continued.
