The Nigerian Army recently made an announcement regarding the detention of one of its soldiers, Private Adamu Muhammad, who serves in the 82 Division in Enugu.

The soldier was detained on allegations of killing his lover, Miss Hauwakulu Tabra, within the Airborne and Amphibious section of the division, as reported on Thursday and discovered the following day by the daughter of an army lieutenant in the division’s officers’ quarters.

There were rumors circulating that the soldier in question, Muhammad, was a former member of Boko Haram who had repented and joined the Civilian Joint Task Force before being enlisted in the Nigerian Army in 2021.

However, the Army responded to these rumors through a statement issued by Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the director of Army Public Relations, on Sunday, confirming the detention of Muhammad and expressing regret over the tragic incident involving Miss Tabra.

The Army emphasized in the statement that it has never enlisted repentant Boko Haram members into its ranks, refuting claims made by certain sources.

The statement clarified that while the Army did consider individuals from the Civilian Joint Task Force who had shown exceptional dedication and loyalty in the fight against terrorism, there was no provision for enlisting former Boko Haram members.

The incident was described as a tragic loss of life due to a personal relationship gone awry, rather than an act committed by a repentant Boko Haram member within the Nigerian Army.
