The urgent need for social media regulation has been made by Bayo Onanuga, a former media advisor to President Bola Tinubu.
Onanuga warned that false information spreading on social media could lead to another civil war in Nigeria.
He took the decision in response to conflicting information regarding the Kaduna governorship election tribunal’s decision.
He expressed regret over a claim that the Kaduna governorship election had been ruled invalid while the panel was still reading its decision.
Onanuga responded, writing on Twitter, “Social media ought to be regulated promptly. There have been so many unreliable stories today regarding the Election Tribunal’s decision regarding the Kaduna governorship.
The headline that has been shared the most is “Kaduna governorship election declared inconclusive.” While the tribunal was still reading its decision, this was going around.
“Social media platforms need to be under some sort of control, or the misinformation and disinformation being spread there will eventually lead to a civil war in our country,”
