In Ribang (Mbang) village, Kauru Local Government Area, Kaduna State, six youths who were returning from taking their Junior West African Examination Council (WAEC) exams on Tuesday perished in the Mbang River.

They perished on Tuesday evening while travelling back from the WAEC centre, at approximately 5:30 p.m.

Students at Government Secondary School Fadan Chawai, Manasseh Monday (16), Musa John (16), Pius David (15), Monday Ayuba (16), David Danlami (19), and Yahuza Audu (16) were the casualties. They were taking the West African Junior School Examination.

The incidence was verified by Pastor Simon Ishaku, the Ribang Development Association’s national public relations officer. With tears streaming down his face, he said that three bodies had been found and buried. Three more are still missing, since locals haven’t been able to get them out of the water.

“While their parents went to the farm anticipating to reconnect with them after their exams, the schoolchildren left their homes full of excitement and hope, only to be met with this tragic event.

“Our village has always been at peril from the Mbang River. The distance that community people must travel to get to any school or hospital is approximately 8 kilometres.

In order to provide relief to his town, Simon implored, “We appeal urgently to the Federal Government, Governor Uba Sani, Senator Sunday Katung, and our House of Representatives members to assist us with schools, hospitals, access roads, and bridges.”

The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency Zone One Zonal Coordinator, Mubarak Muhammad, promised to confirm the occurrence when he was reached.
