The arrest of Simon Ekpa has led to a reduction in tension across the Southeast, according to Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa, following the unrest in the region.

Tensions in the Southeast have significantly decreased following the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Biafra agitator based in Finland.

The disclosure was made by General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, during his appearance before the House of Representatives Committee on Defence to discuss the 2025 budget on Tuesday.

Musa further revealed that the sit-at-home order is slowly diminishing following Ekpa’s arrest. He added that Operation Udoka, led by the Defence Headquarters, is helping to restore peace in the Southeast.

Musa stated that Simon Ekpa’s arrest has significantly eased tensions. Additionally, with Operation Udoka underway, the authorities are apprehending most of the leadership and removing them to ensure peace in the area.

“The Monday sit-at-home protests are slowly decreasing. We’re collaborating with the local political leaders because it’s essential to have their support; without it, progress is challenging due to the difficult terrain. Our joint efforts are making a positive difference.”

The Army chief also mentioned that proactive measures by security agents contributed to a relatively peaceful Christmas holiday period.

Musa asserted that the military is dedicated to using non-kinetic approaches to address the security issue.
