In a surprising turn of events, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) claims victory in 15 out of 17 chairmanship seats in the Abia local government elections. Discover what this win means for the political landscape in Abia State.
The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) delivered a major surprise by winning 15 chairmanship positions in Saturday’s Local Government Elections in Abia, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) secured two seats.
Alex Otti, the Governor of Abia State and a member of the Labour Party along with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently had a falling out with Julius Abure and his team who lead LP at national level.
Prof. George Chima, the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), declared the results of the chairmanship election at the
headquarters of the commission in Umuahia.
Chima stated, “We have fulfilled the responsibility we were assigned on September 5.”
It wasn’t an easy task, but we made a special effort to raise awareness about the elections throughout the state.
It is important to note that, in recent times, this commission has not overseen an election with participation from more than 12 political parties. This fact alone reflects positively on the commission.

The head of ABSIEC stated that the chairmanship and councillorship elections were conducted in all 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
He characterized the exercise as “free, fair, and credible.”
He stated that the elections showcased the commission’s commitment, focus, and efficiency.
Chima was delighted that the commission accomplished a task in just two months, which would normally take six to twelve months.
I extend my congratulations to both the winners and those who did not win, as every election inevitably includes both outcomes.
The crucial aspect is that Abia has remained peaceful, and I wish for this peace to persist.
“I am grateful to the security agencies for their support and commend the political parties for adhering to the rules,” Chima stated.
According to OBASANJONEWS, the ZLP emerged victorious in the LGAs of Isiala Ngwa South, Isiala Ngwa North, Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Obingwa,Aba North Aba South Umunneochi ,Isukwuato ; Arochukhwu Bende eand Ohafia.
