Just one day before Kano’s local government elections, a court has disqualified all NNPP candidates, reshaping the political landscape. Learn more about the court’s decision and its impact.

A new controversy has emerged surrounding Saturday’s local government election in Kano State, as a Federal High Court on Friday dismissed the 44 chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the ruling New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

Justice Simon Amobede removed the NNPP candidates from their positions while delivering a judgment in response to a lawsuit filed by Dalhatu Shehu Usman’s faction of the party.

The judge requested that the faction submit its list of candidates to the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) for approval.

The case involves the following defendants: the Independent National Electoral Commission, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, Inspector General of Police, and Director of the Department of Security Services (DSS).

After reviewing the originating summons submitted on October 8, 2024, Justice Simon Amobede issued an order preventing INEC from providing KANSIEC with access to the voters’ register.

The court additionally mandated the acceptance of the list provided by the plaintiffs.

The court orders that the 1st defendant, INEC, is prohibited from providing the voters register to the 2nd defendant, KANSIEC, for conducting the proposed election on October 26th, 2024.

The 2nd defendant, KANSIEC, is instructed to recognize and consider valid the list of NNPP candidates submitted by Dalhatu Shehu Usman, the acknowledged State Chairman of the party under their Constitution. Any other candidate lists presented by others for Kano State’s 2024 Local Government Election should be disregarded.

“The 3rd and 4th defendants (Police and DSS) are immediately prohibited from offering security or protection at the site of the election scheduled for October 26, 2024.”
