A vessel carrying a highly toxic chemical has struck a tanker transporting jet fuel for the US military, raising concerns over potential environmental and security risks.

Thirty-seven individuals have been brought to shore following a collision between a cargo vessel and an oil tanker off England’s east coast.

Local MP Graham Stuart stated that one person is hospitalized, while the other 36 mariners from both crews are “safe and accounted for.”

The owner of the tanker reports that jet fuel is leaking into the North Sea after a collision off the coast of East Yorkshire.

The video captures thick smoke pouring from the tanker, accompanied by reports of a “massive fireball” being observed.

The Stena Immaculate, a US-flagged vessel transporting fuel for the US government, seems to have been struck while anchored by the Solong, a container ship flying under the Portuguese flag. This information is based on tracking data analyzed by BBC Verify.

According to a maritime data provider, the Solong was transporting 15 containers filled with sodium cyanide along with other cargo.

Sodium cyanide serves a range of commercial purposes, including metal plating and dye production.

Dr. Mark Hartl, an associate professor of marine biology at Herriot Watt University, explains that sodium cyanide is highly soluble in water and can be harmful as it disrupts animal respiration. Additionally, when heated, sodium cyanide can produce a toxic gas.

At this stage, it is uncertain whether any has entered the water or been incinerated, but there is a possibility that it could kill aquatic organisms if ingested.

Dr. Hartl explained that marine organisms, such as fish, tend to have strong avoidance reactions and may have already left the area.

According to a report from maritime data provider Lloyd’s List Intelligence, the Solong vessel was transporting 15 containers of sodium cyanide and additional cargo when it collided with the Stena Immaculate tanker in the North Sea earlier.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) describes sodium cyanide as a solid material resembling white crystals, with a subtle almond scent. In industry, it is utilized for metal cleaning and plating, extraction processes, and photography. Additionally, it serves in the production of other chemicals.

The agency reports that exposure to cyanide salts may lead to symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, nervousness, confusion, changes in heart rate and drowsiness. In severe instances, it can result in cardiac and respiratory issues or even death.
