Abdulkarim Lawan, the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, has asserted that Nigeria’s Vice-President Kashim Shettima faces danger because he travels in a “faulty” presidential aircraft.
Shettima was forced to cancel his journey to the Commonwealth Summit in Samoa due to an incident at a New York airport.
The President’s office confirmed that a “foreign object” struck his plane during a layover at JFK Airport in New York.
The incident damaged several parts of the aircraft, including the cockpit windscreen.

In a statement released on Sunday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Lawan urged the Nigerian Government to acquire a new jet for Shettima.
He expressed his sympathy for the Nigerian Government, particularly towards the office of the Vice President and his team and staff, concerning the unfortunate incident at JFK Airport in New York, USA.
I am grateful to Allah (God) for protecting the valuable life of our beloved Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, as well as everyone on board his ill-fated plane. I also urge the Nigerian government to request a thorough and timely investigation from the United States government regarding this incident that occurred at one of the most secure locations in the world.
The Vice President and his team’s lives are at risk when using the aging and malfunctioning presidential aircraft.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to acquire a new aircraft for Senator Kashim Shettima to prevent future air mishaps.
