Vice President Kashim Shettima visited the Bende area of Abia State on Friday and assured that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is committed to addressing the insecurity in the South-East region.
Over the years, the region has experienced attacks from gunmen, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of properties, and the kidnapping of residents. Shettima acknowledged the economic devastation caused by these assaults and emphasized the President’s determination to restore normalcy.
He highlighted the need to combat the activities of economic saboteurs who disguise themselves as advocates for the Ndi-Igbo, as they hinder Nigeria’s progress. Shettima emphasized that the criminals responsible for the region’s plight do not represent the interests of the Ndi-Igbo or the country as a whole.
He assured that the government will utilize all available resources to establish genuine peace in the region and urged everyone to reject falsehoods and propaganda that threaten national unity.
The issue at hand, according to the Vice President, is a result of criminals who prioritize their own interests rather than those of the Ndi-Igbo and Nigerians as a whole.
He acknowledges that the President is well aware of this fact, which is why no specific group has been held accountable for the actions of law-breaking individuals who claim to be part of that group. This, in his opinion, is the democracy that has been chosen.
The Vice President believes that the criminals causing unrest in the South-East are collaborating with others who have dangerous political motives.
However, he asserts that any attempts to undermine the progress made by the nation’s heroes in the past will ultimately fail.
He emphasizes that the dire situation cannot be resolved unless the government actively involves the people, who he describes as the eyes, legs, and voices of the region. Additionally, during the event, Shettima accepted a title on behalf of Tinubu, which was bestowed upon the President by the Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Mbah.
