Vice President Kashim Shettima has urged those in political authority to prioritise the welfare, progress, and unity of the country over individual or sectarian interests.

Shettima reportedly delivered the advise at a reception honouring Sen. George Akume’s appointment as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and his accomplishments, according to Mr. Olusola Abiola, Director of Information, Office of the Vice President, in a statement.

The North-Central Governors’ Forum reportedly organised the reception, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Shettima also urged everyone in political position now and in the future to model themselves after the SGF.

In a letter titled “a life of honour,” the Vice President praised the SGF and praised Akume as “an idea, a man of honour, and a beacon of unity, loyalty, and integrity in our nation.”

Let’s honour his appointment while also reflecting on his life. Sen. Akume’s continued political success is not a coincidence.

It is the outcome of his steadfast pan-Nigerian principle and reflects his knowledge and vision for a peaceful, stable, and secure Nigeria.

Shettima also lauded the SGF’s qualities that have won over so many people across political and ethnic boundaries.

We are not here to honour one man, he said. Rather, we are here to recognise the strength of a principle and to salute a bright example of integrity and harmony in our wonderful country.

“We find the threads of unwavering faith in the principles of a united Nigeria woven throughout the road that has brought our honoree to this vital position.

“This conviction has served as the inspiration for all of his endeavours.

“The conviction that our strength lies in our unity and diversity, that together we are stronger than the sum of our parts, has guided his steps and fuelled his determination.”

The biggest praise you can get in politics, according to Shettima, is that Akume is the ally you can rely on without opening your eyes.

His ascent to this level is evidence of his commitment to the agreement he has made.

When you agree to uphold the principles that our great nation holds dear, that is what you do.

When you adhere to the ideals of justice, fairness, and equality, you act in this way.

The Vice President also emphasised the need of moral character for those seeking political office.

There are certain positions that no amount of training and experience can qualify you for, according to Shettima.

Our honoree here today holds one such position, one that explains why our educational institutions place a strong emphasis on character when awarding degree certificates to their graduating students.

Our honoree is present now as a result of his devotion to an objective larger than himself.

Sen. Akume “is both a model and a source of inspiration for all those who seek to understand the importance of cooperation in public service in a time of wavering political loyalties.”

Shettima claimed that Akume’s commitment to promoting harmony across the diverse range of nationalities, religions, and geographical regions that make up our country is what genuinely sets him unique.

His examples have crossed boundaries, closing gaps, and fostering understanding in a nation with many different cultures and customs.

He is not just a guy, but an idea because of his dedication to bridging gaps across various groups and cultures in one of the hardest areas to do so, the VP continued.”

Former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Ben Kalu were among the dignitaries present at the occasion.

Others were Senate Leader Bamidele Opeyemi, the governors of Nasarawa State (Abdullahi Sule), Benue (Hyacinth Alia), Niger (Mohammed Bago), the Plateau (Caleb Mutfwang), and Kogi (Yahaya Bello).

The governors of Osun and Kwara, as well as former governors Simon Lalong and Rochas Okorocha, North-Central elders, traditional and religious leaders, and Ministers-designate, were also present. (NAN)
