Senator Shekarau calls on President Tinubu’s administration to admit its mistakes and reassess its policies in response to the ongoing economic hardships facing Nigerians.

The ex-governor of Kano State suggests that the government under Bola Tinubu’s leadership ought to reassess their policies and acknowledge any errors made.

The implementation of the subsidy removal policy and floating of the naira by the Tinubu government have caused Nigeria’s economic fortunes to decline sharply.

Following these policies, the Nigerians have protested due to a significant depreciation in value of their national currency, Naira.

Shekarau suggested that Tinubu and his team examine their economic policies to tackle the issues, and acknowledge any errors made.

On Friday’s edition of Politics Today on Channels Television, the former governor stated that “in the teaching job”, one can achieve optimal learning by making and analyzing their mistakes.

The government should analyze and determine where they have gone wrong, including identifying errors made, incorrect pronouncements made, policies implemented that may contribute to the current crisis of hunger as well as increase in food costs and 40% inflation.

Ever since President Tinubu declared the end of subsidies during his inauguration in May 2023, petrol prices have skyrocketed to almost three times their original cost. This has resulted in a spike in inflation rates.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported that in June 2024, Nigeria’s inflation rate reached a staggering 34 percent. This increase renders the cost of essential commodities out of reach for millions.

Despite Tinubu’s endorsement of a new minimum wage bill and implementation of several initiatives to alleviate the ramifications caused by his administration’s economic policies, numerous Nigerians took to the streets in early August across various cities protesting against their bleak living conditions.

The protesters have requested several things, including the reinstatement of petrol subsidies. Nonetheless, Tinubu maintained that there would be no reversal on the policy in his speech after the demonstrations.

Shekarau contended that the Tinubu administration ought to acknowledge its errors.

“Recognize that certain mistakes have been made, some miscalculations may have occurred and assumptions might have been taken too far,” he expressed. “Presently is an opportunity to reflect on these issues.”
