Shehu Sani, a prominent human rights advocate from Nigeria and a former senator from Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has issued a warning against violence ahead of the Nigeria Labour Congress’ (NLC) planned strike on Tuesday.
Sani asserted that all problems could be solved democratically and cautioned Nigerians against using force to enforce their desires.
The former congressman claimed in a statement he signed and submitted to OBASANJO NEWS24 on Monday in Abuja that Nigeria has made small advancements through democratic processes that must be protected at all costs.
We shouldn’t give up on optimism and turn to violence, he urged. Our democratic process has made some little improvements, which must be maintained.
“Violence is not part of a democratic society; protest and strikes are.”
Prior to this, OBASANJO NEWS24 reported that the Department of State Services, DSS, claimed to have discovered a scheme by some politicians to incite unrest throughout the nation by citing economic problems as justification.
The Service alleged that ethnic groups and students were being organised to organise violent protests around the nation.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, the Service Spokesperson, Mr. Peter Afunanya, said there was information indicating that a protest was planned to criticise the federal government and other security services.
He claimed that the Service had identified the plotters and was keeping a close eye on them.
Afunanya, citing various economic issues, claimed that the allegation that certain elements are currently attempting to destabilise the country should be taken as official information by the general people.
“According to intelligence assessments, the plotters include certain politicians who are frantically rallying gullible student leaders, ethnic-based organisations, young people, and disaffected groups for the intended action.
To prevent them from throwing the nation into anarchy, the Service has identified the plot’s ringleaders and has been continuously monitoring the area around them.
