The ongoing dispute between Philip Shaibu, the governor of Edo State, and Godwin Obaseki took a new turn on Sunday when the DSS barred Shaibu from meeting with the governor.
On Sunday, during a church service to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the founding of Edo State, the event took place in the New Festival Hall of Government House, Benin.
One of the visitors, Shaibu, got up to welcome Obaseki, but he was stopped a few metres away by a DSS agent.
Obaseki, who was sat next to his wife Betsy and Delta State Commissioner Charles Aniagwu, turned away while Shaibu tried in vain to reason with the security guard in plain clothes, who refused to listen. Shaibu later went back to his seat.
Andrew Okungbowa, the governor’s chief press secretary, asserted that the DSS agent was only going about his duties.
“Whatever occurred during the church service was not ordered by the governor, and he was also unaware of what the security guards were doing. Actually, the security guards were carrying out their duties. On top of it, the governor was unaware that the constable was approaching to welcome him. Since the church is a public gathering, the security assistants had a responsibility to protect their leader, he claimed.
Following the embarrassing event, the deputy governor addressed the media in the area and swore utter allegiance to the governor.
In addition, he referred to Obaseki as his older brother.
