The Lagos State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party has announced that citizens will oppose any efforts to install Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as the state’s next governor.
This statement comes after several groups recently endorsed Seyi as a potential successor to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2027.
One group, the Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders, announced their support on Tuesday in Owerri, Imo State. They suggested that Seyi would be encouraged to run for governor either in Osun or Imo states, where it is said his family has roots.
Likewise, a socio-political organization known as Friends of Seyi Tinubu endorsed him as well, praising the president’s son for being a visionary leader with an uncommon blend of intelligence, empathy, and strategic insight.
Nevertheless, their endorsements have faced criticism from a range of stakeholders.
In an interview, Lagos PDP spokesperson Hakeem Amode dismissed the notion by stating, “Lagos will not serve him.”
He raised the question of whether governorship should be passed down as an inheritance, arguing that it was unsuitable for a son to assume this role from his father.
“Governorship is not something that can be handed over,” he emphasized, warning that any attempt by the Tinubu camp to employ tactics similar to those previously used in Ondo and Edo states would face opposition.

He also pointed out that many Lagos residents did not vote for Tinubu in the last presidential election, suggesting they might not back his son for governor.
Previously, the Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths expressed disapproval of a Tinubu family member assuming the governorship. They firmly stated that individuals who are not indigenous should be prohibited from governing Lagos State.
However, Seye Oladejo, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, described discussions surrounding the 2027 elections as premature.
“It’s premature to discuss the 2027 elections,” he stated, encouraging people to concentrate on backing the current government.
He expressed that it is important to support the governor and the president at this time to promote progress.
Earlier, Joe Igbokwe, a prominent chieftain of the APC, also shared his thoughts on the matter via his Facebook page.
“Who are the unidentified individuals advocating for Seyi Tinubu as Lagos Governor? This is an unnecessary distraction. The true aim is to undermine President Bola Tinubu. Leading Lagos isn’t a task for beginners,” he stated.”
