An earlier incident involved Russian hackers threatening European banks.
According to CNN, “a few” US government agencies have been the target of an ongoing global hacking campaign. Wasington does not address the issue of blame, but in recent weeks, Russian-speaking organizations have claimed responsibility for similar intrusions.
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency “is providing support to several federal agencies that have experienced intrusions,” a representative of the organization told the American broadcaster. “We are working quickly to comprehend the effects and guarantee prompt remediation.”
Who launched the attack and how many agencies were impacted are both unknown.
The hack is the most recent in a string of attacks launched in the past two weeks against Western businesses, institutions of higher learning, and governments. The BBC, British Airways, and oil giant Shell have all suffered setbacks, along with the state governments of Illinois and Minnesota.
The majority of the breaches have been attributed to the Russian-speaking group Cl0p, which has threatened to start publishing the information it has obtained from the victims if its ransom demands are not met. According to CNN, the group gained access to its targets by taking advantage of a flaw in the well-known file-transfer application MOVEit.
The hacktivist organizations Killnet, REvil, and Anonymous Sudan, which all speak Russian, announced on Wednesday that they would begin a campaign against European banks and financial institutions “without mercy.” Although it is unknown whether they participated in any recent attacks, these organizations are said to have previously targeted the US government and other Western governments.
