The Afrobeat legend Seun Kuti has been taken into custody for assaulting a police officer, according to Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba.

The arrest of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, who was shown on video attacking a police officer, has been mandated by Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a spokesperson for the Force, revealed this in a statement.

“The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform,” said the statement published late on Saturday.

He claims that the incident will also be looked into.

He said, “The IGP has also mandated a prompt and thorough investigation into the immediate and remote cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect in accordance.”

“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt or disrespect for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such heinous crimes will unquestionably be brought to justice,” the statement reads.

However, Seun Kuti claimed that an attempt was made on his life as well as the lives of his family in a mysterious Instagram story posted to his page (published at around 7:16 pm).

Although he says he has proof of that, he also said that since the offender has shown regret, he won’t seek charges.
