Popular Nigerian singer Seun Kuti, the eldest child of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has asked for legislation to prevent cultist harassment.

He made the call after Mohbad, a musician whose dying had triggered rumours of cult-like connections and activities in the entertainment sector, passed away.

He expressed his opinion about Mohbad’s death on his Instagram page, saying that it was likely related to a cult and that the threat had long existed and was a hazard to the next generation.

He asserted that cultism had permeated the Nigerian system so thoroughly that even law enforcement officials and other purportedly law-abiding citizens were not immune from membership in cults.

He continued by saying that his personal experience in custody was evidence for his claim and that many officers had professed allegiance to him, believing that he was also one of them.

He claims that even the police are cultists: “When I was locked up, many police officers and their ogas informed me their varied cultist affiliation thinking I was one of them so they could aid me. You are now requesting that cultists look into cultists. #getthesax.”

He urged politicians to act right away by passing strict legislation that criminalise cultism and cultist intimidation, warning that if the problem was not fully addressed, a wave of cultists will destroy future generations.

“A country of cowards! In order to prevent cultist intimidation in all of our institutions, we need the MOHBAD Law. Anything less is absolutely nothing! This enormous task needs to be completed by the National Assembly in order to shield future generations from this scourge. Mohbadlaw,” he wrote.
