The country’s Senate has summoned the service chiefs to address the increasing insecurity in the nation.

This decision was made unanimously by the lawmakers during an emergency session on the first legislative day of the year. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele raised the motion on behalf of the Senators regarding the security situation, leading to the Senate going into an executive session.

After two hours of closed-door discussions, the Senate reconvened and resolved to invite the service chiefs next week to address the spate of insecurity.

The service chiefs include General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS); Lt-General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS); Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS); and Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS).

Additionally, the Senate adjourned plenary until February 6 to allow lawmakers to participate in Saturday’s by-elections.

The recent surge in kidnappings and killings across the country, including the murder of two traditional rulers in Ekiti State, has prompted opposition figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to call on the Bola Tinubu administration to take action.

However, the Presidency maintains that the President is effectively addressing the situation.
