The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has taken legal action against President Tinubu’s administration over the recent hike in fuel prices. Learn more about the implications of this lawsuit.

President Bola Tinubu has been sued by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) over his government’s inability to reduce the pump price of petrol.

On Sunday, the Deputy Director of SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare, announced in a statement that they had filed a lawsuit against the President for disregarding the investigation into corruption and mismanagement allegations within NNPCL.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, as well as NNPCL are included in the suit as Respondents.

Last Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja received a suit with reference number FHC/ABJ/CS/1361/2024.

In order to reverse the price increase of petrol from N845 per litre to N600 per litre, SERAP is requesting that President Tinubu be compelled by the court to direct the NNPCL. They claim that this increase was unjust, illegal and unconstitutional.

The plea to the court was for President Tinubu to instruct Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN and relevant anti-corruption authorities towards investigating accusations of corruption and mismanagement within NNPC.

The group is requesting an order that President Tinubu instruct Fagbemi and relevant anti-corruption agencies to pursue legal action against any individuals believed to be implicated in the purported corruption and mismanagement at NNPCL.

As the economic condition in Nigeria declines, the rise in petrol prices is exacerbating poverty and causing tremendous suffering for low-income individuals.

Requiring the NNPC to be accountable for purported corruption and mismanagement in the oil industry would benefit genuine public concerns.
