Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party secures a landmark win in Senegal’s elections, signaling a new era in the nation’s political landscape.
This win gives Pastef considerable influence to implement structural reforms, with representatives celebrating the “overwhelming support of the people.” Voter turnout was nearly 50%.
Ousmane Sonko’s Pastef party achieved a sweeping success in Senegal’s legislative elections on November 17, capturing 130 out of the total 165 parliamentary seats and achieving an unprecedented majority of 78%. The party emerged victorious in 40 out of the country’s 46 departments as well as in seven out of eight overseas constituencies, marking it as the most decisive electoral win since 1988.
This triumph gives Pastef substantial authority to implement structural reforms, as representatives express pride in the “overwhelming support of the people.” Voter turnout approached nearly 50%.
Opposition parties acknowledged their loss, as the coalition of former president Macky Sall was reduced to only 16 seats from a previous count of 83. Meanwhile, the coalition led by former Prime Minister Amadou Ba secured seven seats, and Dakar mayor Barthélémy Dias’s group obtained three seats.
No legal challenges have been reported, and the final results are anticipated within five days.
