Despite spending N11.35 trillion on maintaining the country’s moribund refineries, the Senate expressed disapproval of what they perceived to be sabotage of the Federal Government’s efforts to revive the nation’s refineries.
On Tuesday, the Senate passed a resolution ordering the investigation of all contracts for the rehabilitation of all state-owned refineries between 2010 and 2023 by the Committee on Downstream Petroleum.
In order to prevent waste and corruption, the lawmakers also intend to monitor the progress of all refineries’ ongoing construction projects. They also intend to question the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) about the best way to commercialise and/or ensure the profitability of the state-owned refineries. They also intend to invite the NNPCL, NUPRC, and LN.
