The shutdown of the National Grid and disruption of hajj flights, along with other actions taken by the Organised Labour during the nationwide strike for a new minimum wage, have raised concerns among the Senate. During the plenary on Tuesday, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, expressed his worry and interrupted a lively debate by lawmakers on the industrial action. He emphasized that shutting down the grid is not just a form of protest but an act of economic sabotage.
These concerns were brought to light when some lawmakers shared their opinions and suggestions after Senator Diket Plang presented a motion on the proposed minimum wage. Senator Plang, before the strike was suspended, urged the Senate to call on the Federal Government to expedite action on the new minimum wage in order to put an end to the industrial unrest.
The President of the Senate praised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for calling off the strike, allowing negotiations to continue. He assured that the National Assembly will continue to make efforts and await the minimum wage bill for enactment, ensuring it benefits all Nigerians.
