In order to guarantee that Nigerians have access to clean water, the 10th Senate is committed to passing laws and carrying out oversight duties on water projects around the nation, according to Senate Committee on Water Resources Chairman Abdulaziz Yari.

Speaking on Thursday at the Committee’s first meeting, he said that in order to reach the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number six, clean water delivery would be a joint effort by the legislature, the executive branch, and other stakeholders.

Yari, who represents the Zamfara West Senatorial District, declared that the Committee led by him would give the federal government the tools it needs to guarantee that Nigerians have access to water for sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

Water is essential to life, as everyone knows, and the government must ensure that everyone has access to clean water.

“Yet, the government must make sure that we take advantage of water’s enormous potential for electricity generation, irrigation for agriculture, and transportation.

To guarantee that we fulfil our responsibility of providing efficient oversight of the ministries, departments, and agencies that deal with water, this committee on water resources will collaborate closely with the executive arm of the federal government of our country.

He stated, “Most importantly, we will work to ensure that this Committee’s work is in line with the legislative agenda of the 10th Senate.”

Yari added, “This is democracy, no matter what our intentions are, we have to listen to the yearnings of our people in terms of the bills that we propose and the oversight actions that we take,” in response to inquiries from journalists regarding a few contentious bills from previous sessions.
